Guidelines for Presentations

It is important for all presenters to read the following guidelines:

Oral Presentations

    Basic  Considerations:
    • The audience has to be kept interested during the whole presentation. Only a very logically arranged presentation - clear, concise, and to the point - will accomplish this.
    • Too much material in the limited time allowed, or presentation of the material too rapidly will overwhelm the audience, and the speaker will lose the audience very quickly.
    • INTERMAG attendees come from a variety of scientific disciplines. Some tutorial background is recommended.
    • The enthusiasm of the speaker contributes as much to the success of the presentation as does the scientific content.
    Time:
    • Contributed papers are allowed 12 minutes for the presentation and 3 minutes for questions and discussion.
    • Invited papers are allowed 25 minutes for the presentation and 5 minutes for questions and discussion.
    • Session and paper times are listed in the program book to allow conference attendees to select talks they wish to hear from various disciplines. Session Chairs have been asked to enforce strict time limits.
    • Useful guideline: One transparency per minute.
    • Practice the presentation to ensure the maximum effect at the conference.
    Procedure:
    • Check-in with your session chair about five minutes before the session start time.
    • Presentations will be called only at the published times.
    • The talk HAS to be presented by an author registered for the conference. Authors not registered for the conference will NOT be allowed to make a presentation. If a talk is not presented, the paper will be reported as a "no-show" by the session chair and will NOT be published in the IEEE Transactions on Magnetics.
    Equipment:
    • Overhead projectors for transparencies will be available.
    • Audio-visual equipment other than an overhead projector will not be provided, unless requested well in advance by the author and authorized by both the Program Chair and the Treasurer.

     Poster Presentations

      Basic  Considerations:
      • Poster presentations are just as important a communication medium as oral presentations.
      • The key to a popular and effective poster presentation is careful preparation and organization of presentation materials. Logically arranged and posted materials are a natural audience draw.
      • Posting a copy of the paper, or similar "shortcuts," is strongly discouraged. The author clearly sends the signal that he/she did not care to prepare for the conference.
      • The size of the poster materials should be such that they are easily read  from a few meters away. Expect the aisles to be crowded.
      • Useful guideline: About 6 lines per poster page.
      • INTERMAG attendees come from a variety of scientific disciplines. Some tutorial background is recommended.
      • The enthusiasm of the presenter contributes as much to the success of the presentation as does the scientific content.
      Procedure:
      • The authors must be by their posters from 8:00-9:00 AM and 11:00 AM-12:00 Noon for morning sessions and from 1:00-2:00 PM and 4:00-5:00 PM for the afternoon sessions.
      • The available poster board area will be about 1 m wide by 2 m tall.
      • The poster HAS to be presented by an author registered for the conference. Authors not registered for the conference will NOT be allowed to make a presentation. If a poster is not presented, the paper will be reported as a "no-show" by the session chair and will NOT be published in the IEEE Transactions on Magnetics.
      • Promptly after the end of the session, remove all poster materials. Leave all pins at the poster area for use by authors in the subsequent poster sessions.

IEEE MAGNETICS SOCIETY ANNOUNCES
INTERMAG 2000
STUDENT TRAVEL SUPPORT

The Awards Committee of the IEEE Magnetics Society is pleased to sponsor a small number of students working in magnetics to attend the INTERMAG 2000 Conference to be held April 9-13, in Toronto, Canada. Nominations will be accepted until January 14, 2000, from faculty advisors of the interested students. This deadline will be firm. The nominator must be a member of the IEEE Magnetics Society. The nominator does not have to be the student's primary advisor, but must be intimately familiar with his or her work. The nomination should be made in a one or two page e-mail (ASCII required!), and must contain the following information:

  1. The source and extent of current funding that would be available to help the student travel to  INTERMAG 2000.
  2. Whether or not the student will present a paper; if so, the title, authors and designation of the paper.
  3. Whether or not the student has received a previous travel award.
  4. Itemized budget for travel. In order to help the maximum  number of students to participate in the conference, this award provides only partial travel funding. If air travel is planned, the budget should be based  on the most economical airfares available. Frugality is considered a virtue by the committee.
  5. Name and IEEE membership number of nominator!
  6. E-mail addresses for the student and the nominator.
  7. The home address, phone number and social security number of U.S.-resident students. (This is a U.S. government requirement based on IRS regulations that we cannot avoid.)
The awards will be announced on February 14, 2000.

Nominations for students in the United States and Canada should be sent to:

Dr. William Cain
E-Mail: William.Cain@wdc.com

Nomination for students in all other countries should be sent to:

Dr. Subrata Dey
E-Mail: Subrata.Dey@ReadRite.com

Submission will receive an e-mail confirmation that they have been received; send an inquiry if you do not receive one.

Questions (but NO nominations) to:

F. J. Friedlaender
E-Mail: fritzj@ecn.purdue.edu
Fax: (765) 494 6441
E-Mail addresses MUST be included for all sponsors AND students.
